What do you do when you can't sleep?

Television works for me, though it is rare for me not to nod off fast.

Television or fiction. I really can't stand reading fiction so it does in fact, work well. I always keep a nonfiction by my bed FOR that purpose.
Sitcoms in the way of TV.

Or I just ride the wave and stay awake. I work from home and have a fairly flexible schedule barring when I have to be on my game interviewing someone, so it works well enough.
Or, putz around online.

I hear melatonin supplements are good for sleeping. Anyone tried that? Does it work? Is is safe? I often have trouble getting to sleep because I can't quiet my mind. I sometimes read to distract me, and that can work. I never take naps because I simply can't let myself drift off unless I'm absolutely exhausted. When I finally get to sleep I have trouble waking up the next day. I have an ongoing battle with sleep! Sleep

I actually don't have insomnia, I stay up then get a little bored, then go to bed.
I have that restless mind though often (more often than not) and tend to just keep occupied -
Chris, you should start writing perhaps... may be a very good outlet.
Journaling even.

If you go to bed and your mind is active you are just stressed (even good stress)....so try to get to a point you don't feel that... turn OFF the computer at least three hours before bed. Or two .... the screen tricks your mind into thinking it is daytime. Different glare than a TV.

if I try to read something while laying down, I am guaranteed to fall asleep. Also trying to think about something, like how to relax muscle strains, or sorta meditating, or self hypnosis. I don't last long.

I don't have a schedule, so sleep when I am tired, and that can be day or nite, but more often day. I don't like seeing it getting light out. Not a daytime person, so that helps me get sleeping. I could always fall asleep with the TV or radio on, and after being injured the TV on kept me from having disturbing sorta dreams. No story or images, just strange shapes and colors. They don't happen anymore, but it is easier to fall asleep with something on. Think I have always sorta been that way, unless really tired.
